The tower bridge was a great excursion! London was becoming very crowded so another bridge was needed across the river, and this design was the one selected. We have always called this bridge London Bridge, but it is not. There actually is a real London Bridge, but compared to Tower Bridge, it is very plain.
This is the view of the traffic from inside one of the towers. Unfortunately, whilst we were touring, and walking across it, there was no call for it to be lifted for a ship to pass through. It is lifted around 900 times a year, and must be booked 24 hours ahead.
After the Bridge, we set off to Westminster a cruise boat, and whilst cruising the water police came rushing past, sirens wailing, and lights flashing. London had a water police force prior to a land force.
Ah...BIG BEN!!! Actually called the clock tower, but affectionately knows as Big Ben, after the bell that is in it.
We toured Westminster Abbey, the very beautiful church where all royal weddings, funerals and coronations are held. It is a functional congregation, anyone can attend a service there. I would love to do this, but we are not here long enough. Each hour during the day, there is a prayer, and visitors are invited to join, and at the least, stand still. Whilst we were there, the prayer was for the leaders of all countries.
Aysha liked the garden at the Abbey, she did not like the tombs and graves set in the floor that we had to walk over.
We found our way home on the bus, and enjoyed some R and R before heading out for dinner and the theatre to see .....
We had great seats, and we all loved the show. We have been to the theatre in the West End! Doesn't every Aussie aspire to this?
That's one day done and dusted......the next one.......in the next post.......
I certainly aspire to the seeing something in the West End. I've ticked off Broadway
